TMJ Arthroscopy

TMJ Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to visualise the internal aspect of the temporomandibular joint. It is diagnostic, therapeutic and also operative.

A small camera is inserted into the joint space while you are under a general anaethetic(i.e. asleep).

Certain maneuvers can be undertaken such as breaking up adhesions and mobilization of the cartilage.

I have undertaken training and can competently perform advanced TMJ arthroscopy such as scar tissue removal and cartilage repositioning. These can be discussed in detail at your consultation.

Often two ports are inserted for operative arthroscopy. The most common procedure is ablation of scar tissue within the joint space to increase mobilisation.

Arthroscopy is an invaluable tool for the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ Inernal derangement. Below are some images demonstrating common problems and possible treatments.

ARTHROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES

With the advent of TMJ arthroscopy, a great deal of problems can be addressed with a minimally invasive procedure. A small camera less than 2mm in diameter is inserted into the joint. The clinician must be a skilled operator with extensive training to execute the procedure swiftly and precisely.

There are 2 main advantaged to using arthroscopy -

The first is removal of scar tissue or adhesions which is aimed at increasing the mobility of the joint.

The second is the precise deposition of anti-inflammatory medications which aids in healing and pain control.

The third video demonstrates scar tissue ablation and disc repositioning.

Your specific issue will be discussed in detail at your consultation and the surgical options discussed in order to over you the most appropriate procedure.
