Common TMJ Conditions

TMJ conditions are frequent throughout the population and often are overlooked. It is not uncommon for patients to visit multiple doctors or dentists for many years before a diagnosis is made. The following are common conditions that can arise regarding the temporomandibular joint.

TMJ Internal derangement is the most common surgical problem referred to a TMJ surgeon. Joint function is impaired and often manifests with "jaw locking" whether this is transient or permanent. Limited mouth opening with pain on function are common signs and symptoms.

Osteoarthritis

Just like a knee or hip, the TMJ can be affected by degenerative joint disease often leading to pain and dysfunction. A "grating" sound during eating often means there is "bone on bone" contact and that degenerative joint disease is present.

Idiopathic Condylar Resorption

ICR is a form of degenerative joint disease. This often manifests in young females can can lead to changes in the bite. It is demonstrated by sponteneous resorption of the jaw joints and leads to what is known as an anterior open bite(AOB).

Condylar Hyperplasia

Condylar hyperplasia is a condition that manifests with enlargement of one or both jaw joints over time and is sponteneous in nature. The presentation is often insidious and can lead to what seems to be an asymmetric face.
